How it works
FlightsTaken is a logbook that keeps score. Log the flights you have taken and the site works out the rest — how far you have gone, what you have collected, and what you have yet to reach.
Points
Points come from two places: the flying itself, and the first time you do something new. That second part is deliberate — a hundred flights on the same route should not outscore somebody who has been to a hundred different places.
| What | Points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Logging a flight | +100 | Every flight, every time. |
| Distance flown | +1 | Per 100 miles, measured great-circle from the airports themselves. |
| A new airport | +50 | The first time you fly through it. Departure and arrival both count. |
| A new airline | +75 | The first time you fly with them. |
| A new aircraft type | +100 | A 737-800 and a 737 MAX 8 are different aeroplanes. |
| A new country | +200 | Landing in it or leaving from it. |
| Your first international | +250 | Once only, the first time you cross a border. |
| Your first transatlantic | +500 | Once only. |
| Your first transpacific | +750 | Once only. |
| All fifty states | +5,000 | Fly through an airport in every one. |
Distance is measured, never typed
You cannot enter your own mileage, and the box asking for it does not exist. Every distance is computed here from the coordinates of the two airports, along the great circle an aeroplane actually flies. It is the only way a leaderboard means anything: everybody's miles are measured the same way, by the same arithmetic, whoever logged the flight.
Levels
Your level follows your total score. Nothing is ever taken away — the only way down is to delete a flight you logged by mistake.
- Level 1 — Passenger from the start
- Level 2 — Traveler 1,000 pts

- Level 6 — Aviation Expert 50,000 pts
- Level 7 — Million Miler 100,000 pts
Badges
29Badges are for the things a score cannot describe: a red-eye, a hemisphere crossed, an aeroplane that barely flies anywhere any more. They award themselves the moment a flight qualifies — there is nothing to claim.

Verified flights
When you search a flight number and date, we check it against real operating data. If we find that exact flight on that exact day, the entry is marked Verified and filled in for you — route, aircraft, tail number and times.
An unverified flight is not a lesser one. It scores the same and counts the same. It only means we could not confirm that particular day: our records reach back about a year, older flights are simply outside them, and some regional services are recorded under the operating carrier's own number rather than the one on your ticket. Log it anyway.
Public or private
Every flight has its own setting, and so does your profile. A private flight still scores and still counts toward your badges and collections; it simply does not appear to anyone else. Leaderboards only ever draw on public profiles.
